The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton invites applications for a Lectureship post from candidates with high levels of technical expertise and a commitment to excellence in research and teaching.

Applications are welcome from outstanding candidates with experience in technical aspects of demography and/or social and official statistics, with focus on formal demographic and statistical methodology, and other advanced quantitative methods. The post holder must have a PhD or equivalent level qualification in social/applied statistics, demography or in another relevant subject area, and be able to satisfy all the essential criteria detailed in the job description. 

The post-holder will be required to contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Social Statistics and Demography, in at least two of the following areas: quantitative methods, methods of formal demography, and statistics. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate existing and develop new teaching modules, with special focus on methodological courses at the Department of Social Statistics and the wider Faculty of Social Sciences; to contribute to our postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes in social and official statistics; to contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students; and to carry out administrative duties within the Department and the Faculty. 

The successful candidate will be additionally expected to engage in advanced study and research, including the publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals, and demonstrate leadership in seeking research funding. In particular, the post-holder be able to demonstrate a strong, REF-ready, research portfolio, and will be also expected to start contributing to research income generation and enterprise activities, for example through delivering professional courses on quantitative and demographic methods. 

The post is available on a full-time basis from 1 August 2019, and the successful candidate will be expected to start not later than on 1 February 2020 (non-negotiable). The post is permanent, subject to satisfactory completion of a three-year probationary period. 

The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at Southampton has world class research expertise in demography, statistical modelling, survey methodology, official statistics, global health and social policy, and takes a strategic role in the development and promotion of the use of quantitative methods in the social sciences. The members of the Department contribute significantly to the research activities at the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), the ESRC Centre for Population Change, National Centre for Research Methods, and Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty and Policy.
