A fully funded PhD studentship is available to develop new methods to understand the behaviour of a key class of battery materials. The project will allow you to gain experience in making and testing lithium batteries as well as developing in depth expertise with a range of materials characterisation methods. The aim is to improve understanding of the materials’ behaviour during cycling of a battery and hence gather information on how to improve those materials.

The studentship will be a collaboration between the University of Southampton and Johnson Matthey Battery Materials, and will be jointly supervised between the two organisations. It includes opportunities to work at the JM Technology Centre at Sonning Common, and work at central facilities including the Diamond synchrotron and the ISIS neutron facility are also envisaged.

 The student will join a well-established research activity in Southampton and will have access to state-of-the art facilities for synthesis, characterisation and battery testing. Candidates should hold (or be about to hold) a 1st class or 2:1 degree in Chemistry or a closely related subject, and be enthusiastic to embrace work in a range of different areas and environments.
