The School of Biological Sciences delivers cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading, research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK). We have core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences spanning interests in ecology and evolution, plants and food security, microbiology, neuroscience and developmental biology. We host the National Biofilms Innovation Centre and the Centre for Proteomic Research. We have close alliances within our own Faculty including the Schools of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and with the Faculty of Medicine including the newly established Centre for Cancer Immunology. We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st in the Guardian League Tables 2019 and 2020 for Biological Sciences for student satisfaction within the Russell Group). 

In the first phase of recruitment to five new positions, we are seeking outstanding candidates for a Lectureship funded by a five-year programme grant from Against Breast Cancer (ABC) to Dr Paul Skipp. It will focus on molecular phenotyping of breast cancer patients to identify new biomarkers and associated risk factors that can be used to improve a patient’s outcome. You will have expertise in Systems Biomedicine and the application of multi-omic technologies in combination with network analysis for molecular phenotyping. You will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term programme linked to the Centre for Cancer Immunology and to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum through research-led education. Funded entirely by ABC, you will assist in their fund-raising and public engagement. The post is fixed term with an initial five-year contract. 

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a discipline associated with biological sciences
  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding 
  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications in the area of Systems Biomedicine
  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
