Integrated ATR and Raman Photonic Chip for Rapid Bedside Biomarker Diagnostics

You will join a multidisciplinary team realising a disposable two-in-one ATR/Raman integrated photonic chip using advanced materials and a portable customised Mid-IR/Raman spectrometer for rapid point-of-care biomarker diagnostics, centered on state-of the art integrated photonics research. The project is funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) (https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/S03109X/1). The team, led by scientists, engineers and clinicians from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton, will use Mid-IR and Raman spectroscopies for the diagnostics of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (nRDS). Working at the forefront of integrated photonics research, in collaboration with researchers in the complementary disciplines, the research fellow will realise desktop instruments with plug-in disposable chips for use in surgeries, wards and remote communities. 

To be successful you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in an appropriate scientific discipline and have a detailed understanding of photonics, spectroscopy and optical instrumentation.  You will collaborate closely with researchers in the Faculty of Medicine. 

The ORC has a 40-year track record of pioneering contributions in photonics and is currently one of the largest and most dynamic research centres in this field world-wide.  The Integrated Photonic Devices Group explores the fundamentals of guided wave optics at surfaces, with applications including telecommunications, biosensing and novel light sources, and is complemented by the world-class photonic materials and fabrication facilities of the Zepler Institute (www.zeplerinstitute.ac.uk).
