Applications are invited for a Database Technician to work as part of the Maritime Endangered Archaeology (MarEA: https://marea.soton.ac.uk/) project within the University of Southampton. MarEA is a collaborative project between the University of Southampton and Ulster University, in partnership with Oxford University, funded by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. The project aims to rapidly and comprehensively document and assess threats to the maritime and coastal archaeology of the Middle East and North Africa through a combination of satellite remote sensing, archival information and field survey.

The successful applicant will take responsibility for the development and management of specialist MarEA database structures within the overall EAMENA database, management of MarEA data and provide technical programming expertise and IT support to the wider project team.

Suitable candidates will have:

  • Relevant NVQ3/HNC/A-level/City & Guilds, equivalent qualification or proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training’

  • Experience in database development and/or management, programming or coding/scripting/querying (PostgreSQL, Python, JavaScript).

  • Experience in graph databases, using CIDOC CRM and the Arches platform.

  • Experience of digital archiving, coastal/maritime projects and satellite/aerial image analysis would also be advantageous.

The post is a full time appointment, fixed-term for 2 years and starting as soon as possible. The post holder will be based at the Department of Archaeology (University of Southampton) but also work in close coordination with project partners in Oxford and Ulster.
