We are seeking to appoint a talented researcher with a background in qualitative research to join the Centre for Community and Clinical Applications of Psychology (CCCAHP), at the University of Southampton. The purpose of CCCAHP is to promote the application of psychology to alleviate health problems in clinical and non-clinical populations.  We are a large and active research group with a community of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and strong links to the University’s Primary Medical Care Group.

This role involves conducting qualitative research with participants in the NIHR HTA funded ATLANTIS trial (“Amitriptyline at Low-dose and Titrated for Irritable Bowel Syndrome as Second-line Treatment”).  The ATLANTIS trial is a multicentre placebo controlled randomised controlled trial led by the University of Leeds with Southampton and Bristol to assess the effectiveness of amitriptyline for Irritable bowel syndrome.  Tasks include arranging and conducting qualitative interviews over the telephone with trial participants (patients and staff), managing data in NVivo, analysing the qualitative data using techniques from thematic analysis and framework analysis, and writing up for publication in peer reviewed journals.

The work will be carried out under the direct supervision of Associate Professor Felicity Bishop (Psychology) working closely with Professor Hazel Everitt (Primary Medical Care Group).  We would be happy to consider a candidate wanting to conduct a part-time PhD alongside this post (but cannot offer funding for tuition fees).

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in health psychology or a closely related subject (e.g. clinical psychology, sociology, health services research). Your knowledge and experience will usually have been gained through a relevant MSc or PhD, but may also have been achieved via other research experience, normally supported by a relevant postgraduate degree. You will have demonstrated your ability to work independently and efficiently in a research context, and will have excellent written English skills with meticulous attention to detail. You will have excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods with previous experience of conducting and analysing qualitative interviews.  Ideally you will have some understanding of and an interest in irritable bowel syndrome.  Knowledge and experience of mixed methods research and/or primary care research would be an advantage.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service clearance at Standard level is also required.

Potential applicants who would like to discuss the posts are welcome to contact Associate Professor Felicity Bishop F.L.Bishop@soton.ac.uk.

The position is available from 1st January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is funded until 30/4/2022.

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
