An exciting opportunity is available in the Faculty of Medicine for a Research Fellow to join the CHERISH programme team working on a Global Health research programme to improve adult health in sub-Saharan Africa. The position is funded by the National Institute of Health Research through a Global Health Professorship awarded to Professor Nuala McGrath. 

CHERISH designs and evaluates interventions for couples affected by HIV, diabetes and other health conditions, and is a partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town. 

You will analyse existing secondary data for couples in Africa and contribute to primary data collection in South Africa to identify opportunities for couples-focused health intervention development.  

Essential Skills 

  • Ability to work with others in a collegiate and collaborative international interdisciplinary environment
  • Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to Global Health research
  • A *PhD in a relevant subject (Epidemiology, Demography, Medical/Social Statistics or a relevant quantitative social science discipline)
  • Advanced statistical skills and experience of using Stata or R 
  • Previous experience with multi-level modelling and methods to analyse longitudinal population, panel or cohort data 
  • An analytical mindset with attention to detail and a drive for rigour 
  • An interest in improvements to data collection and data management

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You will need to be able to work overseas in rural South Africa for visits of approximately 3 weeks, 2-3 times per year, as part of managing project-related activities with the South African teams engaged in primary data collection. You will hold a national passport of a country that is exempt from visas for visits to South Africa of up to 90 days per annum (see A full clean driving licence is highly desirable.
