Fibre & Systems Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £30,942 to £38,017 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term for 2 years
Closing Date:  Monday 25 November 2019

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position at the University of Southampton. You will join our growing team within the Hollow Core Fibre group (www.hcf.soton.ac.uk)working on next generation optical fibres which guide light in an air core and have the potential to surpass the performance of conventional optical fibres. Specifically, you will be responsible for developing mid-infrared fibre characterisation tools, tailored for operation with these specialty fibres, as well as demonstrating their capacity in mid-IR applications.

This research is a key part of a large European-funded ERC project “LightPipe” which aims to revolutionise current optical fibre technology by overcoming the limitations of conventional, glass core fibres in terms of minimum loss, spectral range and power handling. This project is also strongly aligned with other hollow core fibre based programmes at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and will provide opportunities to collaborate both internally and externally, with our numerous academic and industrial partners. You will be joining a large and successful team within our world-leading photonics research centre and you will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides.

You will need a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in optics or photonics with some experimental component.  Hands-on experience of working with and characterising optical fibres, including fibre handling, cleaving and free space beam coupling, would be advantageous. Experience of working with, and designing mid-infrared optical components and a working knowledge of mid-IR optical sources, detectors, spectrometers and materials is also strongly desirable.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This post is full time fixed term for 2 years.
