Research Fellow in Inorganic Materials Chemistry

Functional, Inorganic, Materials & Supramolecular Chemistry

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £30,942 to £33,797 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term until 02/12/2022
Closing Date:  Wednesday 11 December 2019
Interview Date:   Sunday 13 January 2019

You will identify new high mobility p-type transparent conductors, working with Dr Geoff Hyett on an EPSRC funded project. The identification of high performance p-type transparent conductors would open up the possibility of ‘transparent electronics’, novel device architectures and help to revolutionise the field of optoelectronics. The project title is “Layered copper oxychalcogenides for next generation p-type transparent conductors”. We aim to discover new p-type transparent conductors using a design led synthetic strategy aided by computational modelling, in collaboration with the group of Prof David Scanlon at UCL, and develop a fundamental understanding of the role of structure and composition of oxychalcogenides in influencing their electronic and optical properties.

During this project you will carry out inorganic synthesis of layered oxychalcogenides, characterise them using diffraction and spectroscopic techniques, and determine their transport properties using Hall measurements. You will work in collaboration with colleagues at UCL, and help to develop models of structure property relations, and apply these to your research work. You will aid in the dissemination the findings of the research by taking a lead in preparing material for publication in refereed journals, and present work at conferences and other appropriate events. You will be involved in supervision of undergraduate project students, and be expected to adhere to and support our strict safety standards. You may also be required to take part in teaching duties, under academic staff guidance.

It is essential you have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials or Physics and demonstrate a detailed understanding and knowledge of solid state chemistry and synthesis. You will be able to show evidence of your ability to organise research activity and to meet deadlines. You will be able to effectivity communicate in written and verbal form, and to engage the interest and enthusiasm of the target audience.

You will be based in the School of Chemistry at University of Southampton. Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for chemistry teaching and research. Chemistry has a national and international reputation for excellence. We provide unique services such as the UK’s National X-ray Crystallography Service, which supports and develops world-leading research in the physical sciences.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in Chemistry. In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science we were awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award in 2014 a and a second Silver award in 2017.  Chemistry gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, onsite childcare facilities For further information please visit
