Reading and revision during writing

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2020/21 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

1st: David Galbraith, School of Education; 2nd: Denis Drieghe, School of Psychology; 3rd: External consultant/advisor (Veerle Baaijen, University of Groningen).

Revision is arguably the most important but least well-understood component of the writing process. It is also the activity that students learning to write find most challenging. This project aims to investigate how variations in revision are related to the development of the writer’s understanding during writing and the quality of the text that they produce. It will use a combination of keystroke-logging, eye-tracking and retrospective verbal protocols to investigate how reading and revision interact during writing. It will provide an exciting opportunity to learn advanced quantitative methods, and the findings will have important implications for the teaching of writing.

Skills Required

The student should be able to manage controlled experiments, show evidence of prior achievement in quantitative data analysis, and have experience of cognitive psychology.

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15009 (2019/20 UKRI rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (
