Understanding Agile Project Management to raise productivity and efficiency within businesses

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2020/21 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Dr Serkan Ceylan (DDAR) Director of the Centre for Applied Science in Project Management S.ceylan@soton.ac.uk: Dr David Baxter (SIE) Associate ProfessorD.Baxter@soton.ac.uk; Dr Martin Kunc

This mixed-methods research will focus on agile project management. Studies suggest that only 22% of projects wholly met their original objectives (APM, 2017). There is a growing interest of understanding the dynamics of agile lightweight, robust and hybrid approaches to further project success and this research project will leverage successful grant applications in the pan-sector area of project management to overcome current challenges of further insights.

Skills Required

Strong qualitative and quantitative background; ideally an MSc in Project Management, or related subject; PhD student needs some prior practical or research experience in project management. Preferably on agile approaches but this is not a pre-requisite. Applicant may have some prior knowledge in system dynamics.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15,009 (2019/20 UKRI rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
