The School of Biological Sciences is integral to cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading, research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK for research intensity). We have core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences spanning interests in microbiology, virology, glycobiology, structural biology, neuroscience, developmental biology to ecology and evolution, plants and food security. We host the National Biofilms Innovation Centre, the Centre for Proteomic Research. We have close alliances within our own Faculty including the Schools of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and with the Faculty of Medicine including the newly established Centre for Cancer Immunology. Our current research programmes hosted within the School include HIV vaccine research, infectious cancers, breast cancer therapeutics, antibody engineering, molecular phenotyping in disease, biofilms and the glycobiology of viruses. We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st in the Guardian League Tables 2019 and 2020 for Biological Sciences for student satisfaction within the Russell Group). 

As part of our phased recruitment of several new positions, we are seeking outstanding candidates for the following position: 

Lecturer/Associate Professor in Molecular Bioscience or Molecular Immunology (Salary:  £39,152 - £64,145). You will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term programme that complements existing strengths within the School of Biological Sciences. You will have a growing international profile in molecular immunology (broadly interpreted). Examples of suitable specialities include but are not restricted to: immunology, infection, virology, glycobiology, neuroimmunology or cancer immunology. While the successful applicant would be expected to have a research and teaching interest in immunology and/or infection, there will be scope to refine the post title to reflect the sub-speciality of the successful applicant.  

You will have an interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on our core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences. You will have an enthusiasm to build the international reputation of the School. You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in molecular life sciences.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding 
  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in biological sciences.
