The School of Biological Sciences is integral to cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK). We have strengths in ecology and evolution, cellular and molecular biosciences, food security, plants, microbiology, neuroscience and developmental biology. We have close alliances within our own Faculty with the Schools of Geography and Environmental Science and Ocean and Earth Science, and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. We have superb facilities including world-class proteomics, imaging and licensed environmentally controlled rooms. Our shared research laboratories contain individual research groups, and common equipment areas housing genomics equipment including real-time PCR, an invertebrate facility, and a plant growth facility including glasshouse. We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st for student satisfaction in the 2019 and 2020 Guardian League Tables for Biological Sciences within the Russell Group). 

As part of our phased recruitment to five new positions, we are seeking outstanding candidates for the following position: 

Lecturer/Associate Professor in Ecology (Salary:  £39152 - £64145). You will have a growing international profile in ecology in any of the following areas: land-use change, food systems, and/or sustainability, using methods that could include spatial modelling, field experiments, and/or molecular techniques. You will have an interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on strengths in ecology within the School of Biological Sciences. Your research will complement the interests of colleagues across the faculty who work on the ecologies of tropical and temperate agricultural landscapes, agri-ecosystems and food security, biogeography and remote sensing. We encourage applications with a molecular ecology component who will take advantage of our excellent laboratory facilities. You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in biology, ecology and zoology, including the student experience of field ecology.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in biological sciences or related field
  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding 
  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
