A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced GIS Web Application Developer to join the WorldPop Research Group at the University of Southampton.

The post holder will use their technical expertise and skills to develop GIS web services and programs to support the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) platform for WorldPop.  These services, of which some are public facing, are mainly used by WorldPop staff. Thus, your work will have a significant impact on the research and reputation of the WorldPop research group. The new services we develop use modern web architecture standards with APIs. To this end, you will have experience in working with GIS software and creating web based solutions.

WorldPop GIS Web Application Developer will work with a team of like-minded professionals to create and deploy mission critical applications by designing and developing compelling analytical web applications. These web applications will be used by in house geospatial analysts to undertake intelligence-based GIS research.

The post holder will also provide advice and necessary training to WorldPop researchers in use and application of GIS web services to address research questions.

To be considered, you will have a degree in computing or a computer related discipline or equivalent suitable experience. You will have expertise with PHP, Python and experience of web application development and software engineering principles, tools and techniques. Strong communication skills are also essential.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Experience working with GIS software and creating web based solutions
  • Experience of setting up web sites with a good knowledge of PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS.
  • Experience working with JQuery, including how to use JavaScript and Ajax/XHR to create responsive web clients that consume JSON services
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, including technical writing
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to complete large volumes of work efficiently and effectively

You will work under the supervision of Dr Maksym Bondarenko, WorldPop Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, in offices in the city centre. The position is available until 31 December 2020, with a likelihood of extension.
