Joining our EPSRC-funded project on transpiration cooling you will contribute to computational research using scale resolving simulations. Due to funding restrictions this is initially offered as a 1-year position ideally starting in March-May 2020.

You will be responsible for simulating hypersonic flow over a porous medium.  This is a multi-scale flow problem requiring a high level of simulation and modelling skills. The work will include code development in C++/Fortran 90 and physical modelling based on high-resolution simulations of three-dimensional flow within and over the porous surface as well as applications in a hypersonic external flow with shocks. The main tool will be a structured adaptive mesh refinement with shock capturing as already implemented in our AMROC framework with higher order hybrid WENO/central difference solver. Significant contributions in the development of porous media boundary conditions, considering conjugate heat transfer, and comparison of high-resolution results to available experiments are expected. A project extension to additionally include accurate representation of non-equilibrium high enthalpy flow conditions is envisioned. 

Successful candidates will have a strong background in both code and numerical method development and in fluid mechanics/aerothermodynamics and will have demonstrated scientific excellence and initiative in previous research. Prior experience with scale-resolving simulations (DNS or LES) and their analysis in a high-performance computing environment would be beneficial. As well as carrying our research to the highest standards, the successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team and to prepare reports and presentations for project meetings and publications for international journals. They will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications/experience in Fluid Dynamics.
