Make sure our people are heard.

Are you a ready to be the voice of HR in an industry-leading establishment? Have you got masses of ideas on how to really connect with people and make their working lives even better? If you think you’ve got what it takes to deliver HR initiatives to a highly skilled and diverse team, then the University of Southampton is an incredible place in which to establish and develop your skills.

Regardless of your background – be that private, public or voluntary sector – this is a career-defining opportunity for a dynamic senior-level HR professional to help shape the future of a well-respected higher education establishment that sits within the top 1% of universities worldwide. Taking responsibility for all HR advisory services, you will therefore provide the type of visionary strategic advice on people plans that will ensure we maintain our world-class reputation.

As there is no one currently performing this role, you will have plenty of scope to shape the role as you see fit. One such area that needs developing and modernising is employee engagement, so we will give you all the support you need to embrace this key opportunity. One of two directors reporting to the Executive Director HR, you will lead from the front. Coming up with new ways to quickly and efficiently measure staff engagement and act on your findings, you will tackle everything from change management, to the best ways to recruit and retain talent. With oversight of our client-facing HR Business Partners, your reach will take you from shaping transformation initiatives to building a pipeline of talent that will benefit the next generation of students.

This role won’t just provide you with the chance to shape and embed industry-leading concepts, it will provide you with access to some of the world’s leading thinkers – plus the chance to build relationships with them for the good of the university. As such, you’ll excel here if you’re a collaborative team-player who can combine patience with plenty of ambition. With a pragmatic approach to getting the job done, you’ll enjoy every minor victory. On a practical level, you will have organisational development experience, with a strong knowledge of employee relations and great mentoring skills. With knowledge of working in a unionised environment, you will be an analytical thinker with plenty of emotional intelligence and the capacity to solve complex problems.

The challenges and rewards associated with this role are second to none. We want you to grow with us, so we will provide you with access to training and development opportunities, plus plenty of support to implement your concepts. Further enhanced by a truly competitive benefits package that includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance (30 days plus bank holidays and 6 closure days), subsidised health and fitness facilities, a range of discounts plus onsite childcare facilities, there is plenty to enjoy at the University of Southampton.

Our people don’t just want to be ‘managed’ – our people want to come on this journey with you, embracing your initiatives so that we can create the type of working environment that will generate the most exceptional educational and research outputs for many years to come.
