The Southampton Theory, Astronomy and Gravitation (STAG) research centre, which spans Physics and Mathematical Sciences, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in quantum field theory, gravity, string theory and holography, starting from 1st October 2020.

The successful applicant will join the theoretical particle physics and string theory groups within the STAG research centre. Members of STAG working at the interface between quantum field theory and gravitation include Professor Marika Taylor, Professor Kostas Skenderis, Dr Ines Aniceto, Dr Oscar Dias, Dr Carlos Mafra and Dr Ben Withers in Mathematical Sciences, and Professor Tim Morris, Professor Nick Evans, Dr Andy O’Bannon, Dr James Drummond and Dr Masanori Hanada in Physics. The successful applicants will have a track record of research in the development and applications of quantum field theory, string theory and holography, and will contribute to the development of the research group.

The successful applicant should have a PhD* (or close to completing a PhD) in Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, or equivalent research experience. 

The remaining research interests of the theoretical particle physics group in Physics include LHC phenomenology, physics beyond the standard model, cosmology, neutrino physics, exact renormalization group, and lattice QCD. The gravity group in Mathematical Sciences works closely with the string group and studies gravitational waves, neutron stars and black holes.

This post is STFC funded and there is a possibility for extension to a third year, subject to review at the end of the first year of the post.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of their PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
