Project description

We are offering a PhD position at the interface between theoretical quantum optics and condensed matter physics, suitable for a candidate aiming to translate fundamental physical concepts into futuristic technology. Recent experiments, culminating in a decade of worldwide theoretical investigations, have demonstrated the possibility of shaping the quantum vacuum in order to modify the optical, chemical, and structural properties of matter. By allowing us to focus the fluctuations of the quantum electromagnetic vacuum, quantum nanophotonics now paves the way towards: increasing the critical temperature of superconductors; creating novel hydrogenoid systems; and influencing the rate of chemical reactions.

Our group has been one of the pioneers of this field, predicting many recently observed groundbreaking effects. Our aim is to exploit nanophotonic resonators to create novel forms of matter, with electronic and vibrational configurations not found in nature. We also investigate how such novel physical objects can be exploited in fields spanning electronics, chemistry, material science, and quantum technologies. 

The project will offer an opportunity to learn advanced analytical and numerical methods in theoretical physics, including the theory of open quantum systems and of ultrastrong, non-perturbative light-matter coupling. Our group has active collaborations with many prestigious research institutions worldwide, which means our PhD candidates can build up experience in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, or the USA. Moreover, thanks to our strong ties with experimental groups, our students are offered the important and rewarding opportunity of having their theoretical predictions of novel quantum effects rapidly verified experimentally.

The group leader, Prof. Simone De Liberato, is also a technological serial entrepreneur, having translated concepts of fundamental quantum mechanics into commercially successful companies. Should the occasion arise, he will encourage the student’s entrepreneurial inclination, which has in the past led to the creation of successful commercial and technological initiatives.

The suitable candidate should have a 1st or good 2:1 or better degree in Physics, Mathematics, Material Science, or closely related subjects. Contact us immediately to find out more.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 March 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition for EU/UK Students plus, for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
