Senior Research Fellow / Research Fellow in health workforce research

We are looking for a research fellow who is keen to use their skills to address a critical issue for today’s NHS: How does the size and composition of the staff on hospital wards affect costs and outcomes for patients and staff?

Joining a small interdisciplinary research group, whose work has contributed to policy and safe staffing guidance in the UK and worldwide, you will work on a study funded by the National Institute for Health Research, exploring the costs, consequences and cost-effectiveness of different workforce configurations in English acute hospitals. This study will model how variation in daily care staffing levels and skill mix are associated with patient mortality, length of hospital stay, readmission within 30 days of discharge, and other adverse staff and patient outcomes.  We aim to provide a friendly, supportive environment for early career researchers, and we value colleagues who can plan and organise work independently and as part of a team.

You should have relevant experience in health services research and hold/be working towards a PhD in a relevant discipline (including Statistics, Health Economics, Operational Research or other quantitative health services research related discipline), with interest and experience in using large data sets. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the project including project management, data acquisition, analysis, preparation of reports and publications, according to their previous experience and seniority.

This post will be based within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. The University of Southampton is one of the top 100 universities in the world. The post is available full-time (part-time or job share also available). It is funded for 30 months from March 2020 with a fixed term contract initially, but we will work with you to identify opportunities for ongoing funding.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
