A position for an Early-Stage Researcher pursuing PhDs in the area of Artificial Intelligence without bias

3 year fixed term contract

The Law School at the University of Southampton is inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher to work in the area of Artificial Intelligence decision making without bias. The researcher will work within the interdisciplinary community of a large EU-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network and will pursue a PhD in Law at the University of Southampton as part of their 3-year engagement with the project.

The specific research topics include data protection law, equality law, consumer law, and more generally approaches to characterise legally-relevant bias (e.g. direct or indirect discrimination) in inaccessible (black box) algorithms and explain decisions generated by these systems. The successful candidate will have an LLB in Law and possibly an LLM and will be willing to collaborate with researchers and industrial partners in these areas who may work in a different discipline. The role will involve international travel to partner institutions (in Europe, Italy and Germany). The visits will more be more than 30 days, as it will involve 3 secondments over the duration of the project (of 3-4 months each).

At the time of recruitment (i.e. first date of employment), you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc...) in the UK for more than 12 months, in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment under this project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. At the time of recruitment, you must not yet have been awarded your doctorate and must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of your research career.
