A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced GIS Application Developer to join the WorldPop Research Group at the University of Southampton.

The successful candidate will join the WorldPop Spatial Data infrastructure (SDI) team, which is comprised of GIS software developers. The team focus on the development and delivery of GIS user applications in addition to custom GIS web services and the automation of spatial analysis processes.  The successful applicant will frequently interact with the WorldPop Research Group and participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing and deployment activities.

Under the supervision of the head of SDI team, you will work with existing data sources producing new data tools/applications and resources for use by a diverse group of researchers. You will work with the SDI team to develop innovative approaches and assist with GIS and other data management and analytical needs. Your skills will also be relied upon for the setup of systems and developing applications for data access, data integration and linkage, database management and access, web service development, data curation and cleaning, and related data management and programming services. Given the range and complexity of the data involved, you will be required to be open to learning new methods and technologies, work in both large and small teams, and to develop innovative computational and data management solutions on an as-needed basis.

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of GIS concepts and technologies and will be familiar with all phases of a formal software development lifecycle (SDLC).  Moreover, the applicant will connect users with the right information in an engaging and responsive way by developing applications using Python, API and modern frameworks (e.g. Leaflet).  These applications, of which some are public facing, are mainly used by WorldPop staff. Thus, your work will have a significant impact on the research and reputation of the WorldPop research group.

The post holder will also provide advice and necessary training to WorldPop researchers in use and application of GIS web services to address research questions.

To be considered, you will have the skill level equivalent to achievement of HND, Degree, NVQ4 or basic professional qualification.

You will have expertise with Python and experience of GIS application development and software engineering principles, tools and techniques. Strong communication skills are also essential.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Software development experience with Python (including ArcPy).
  • Experience developing tools to analyse spatially-enabled raster and vector data.
  • Experience with GIS technologies such as QGIS, ArcGIS.
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs, JSON, and GeoJSON
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, including technical writing
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to complete large volumes of work efficiently and effectively

You will work under the supervision of Dr Maksym Bondarenko, WorldPop Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, in offices in the city centre. The position is available until 31 October 2020, with a strong likelihood of extension.

For informal discussions about this post, contact Dr Bondarenko.
