PhD Studetnship - Understanding the role of protein conformation at the nanoscale: In-situ TERS studies of amyloidogenic Tau aggregation

Electrochemistry

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:  Tuesday 31 March 2020
Reference:  1240120EB

Supervisor:                 Dr Iris Nandhakumar

Co-supervisor             Prof. Sumeet Mahajan, Dr Amrit Mudher

Project description

Applications are invited for a prestigious  PhD studentship to work on an exciting interdisciplinary project between the Schools of Chemistry and Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton

The project is funded for 4 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in either Chemistry, Biology or related discipline. The project is aimed at understanding the role of protein conformation at the nanoscale which is essential for the early detection, diagnostic screening and the development of preventative therapeutic interventions in diseases such as Alzheimers. To-date the molecular mechanism and the role conformation plays in protein aggregation and toxicity is not well understood. As part of this project the successful candidate will develop novel in situ physico-chemical characterisation tools for assessing protein aggregation. This will be achieved by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) executed through the tip of an Atomic Force microscopy (AFM) probe also called tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) which can yield chemical level resolution on single molecules.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Iris Nandhakumar, Department of Chemistry, Email: iris@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 6877.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 March 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
