Project description

There are several openings for PhD students to work on development and application of high-fidelity experimental methods to study the performance of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic system systems relevant to future flight and sustainable environment you will carry out aerodynamic measurements using state-of-the-art imaging techniques in brand-new experimental facilities. The goal is to use the high-fidelity data and advanced analysis techniques (deep learning, data assimilation etc) to better understand the performance of flow systems in the context of future flight and sustainable environment. The results of this research are expected to be published in field’s top journals. You will also have the opportunity to attend several international conferences during your PhD. Some possible projects include, 

  1. Drag reduction and drag management in turbulent flows

  2. Unconventional aerodynamic/hydrodynamic systems such as multiple flapping wings

  3. Aeromechanics of wings encountering turbulent conditions

  4. Novel Multi-rotor aerodynamics at different scales

In all of these projects, you will have the unique opportunity to design new experiments in state-of-the-art wind tunnels and water flumes (brand-new wind tunnel, water flume, channel flow and an aeroacoustic wind tunnel), record and analyze high-fidelity experimental data acquired using advanced flow diagnostic methods. All of the projects are open-ended, and the details of the project will be tailored to suit your interests and skills.

You should have a first-class degree in a general area of Engineering. You should have interest and some experience in carrying out experimental work. Laser diagnostics experience is preferred but not a requirement. A strong mathematical and computing (MATLAB, PYTHON etc.) foundation is necessary for development of data analysis codes and subsequent model synthesis.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
