A Ship Performance Data Analyst is required to join the University of Southampton to work within Silverstream Technologies Ltd, the industry leading provider of Air Lubrication technology, and contribute towards their vision of reducing global emissions from shipping.

This is will be part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), which is a collaborative project between Silverstream Technologies Ltd and the University of Southampton’s Maritime Engineering Group.  

It is a unique opportunity to develop practical Machine Learning skills with the support of world-leading experts at the University of Southampton and The Alan Turing Institute, the UKs national institute for AI and data science. To help with this there is a substantial training budget and guidance from mentors with a range of skill sets.

Silverstream Technologies Ltd have developed the Silverstream® System, the shipping industries leading air lubrication technology, that reduces the frictional resistance between a vessel’s hull and the water to deliver emission reductions of 5-10%, depending on the vessel and its operating profile

To further improve the performance of the system, Silverstream Technologies Ltd are seeking to develop cutting-edge machine learning/AI techniques.  

The Ship Performance Data Analyst will be required to undertake the following:

  • The development of a machine learning system to enhance control of the Air Lubrication System and seek to embed AI techniques more widely within Silverstream’s working practices.
  • Lead the project management over a 2-year period, presenting progress at quarterly meetings.
  • Writing and editing of reports.
  • Participation in impact and public engagement activities.

The successful Ship Performance Data Analyst will have the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Degree qualified in Engineering (preference for Naval Architecture), Computer Science or Mathematics.
  • Strong interest in developing Machine Learning skills.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, comfortable talking with colleagues, stakeholders and potential customers.
  • An interest on the commercial impact of relevant research.

The candidate will be based in the Silverstream Head Office, currently relocating to a new premise in Central London. There will also be the potential for visits to industrial partners, experimental facilities in Germany and trade shows in Europe.
