Nursing, Midwifery and Health

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £30,942 to £38,017
Full Time Fixed Term (24 Months)
Closing Date:  Friday 28 August 2020
Reference:  1280520CF

We are looking to appoint a Research Fellow with a background in health services research, health economics or a related discipline with interest and experience in using large data sets.

Joining a small interdisciplinary research group whose work has contributed to health workforce policy and guidance in the UK and worldwide, you will work on a feasibility study exploring the impact of nursing shift patterns in acute, community and mental health hospital wards. This study will model how variation in nursing shift patterns are associated with staff sickness absence, staff turnover, and patient length of hospital stay, readmission within 30 days of discharge, and other adverse staff and patient outcomes.

The study is supported by the Workforce & Health Systems theme within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex and the post holder will work closely and collaboratively with the NIHR ARC Wessex and partner organisations.

The NIHR ARC Wessex conducts applied health research with the aims to improve outcomes for patients and public; improve quality, delivery and efficiency of health and care services; increase the sustainability of health and care systems locally and nationally, through collaborative partnership. It has four thematic programmes of work:

•             Ageing and Dementia

•             Healthy Communities

•             Long Term Conditions

•             Workforce & Health systems

The post is available full time (part-time or job share also available). The successful candidate(s) should have relevant experience in health services research and hold a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant discipline including Statistics, Health Economics, Operational Research or other quantitative health services research related discipline.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the project including project management, data acquisition, database creation, data analysis and preparation of publications, according to their previous experience and seniority. We aim to provide a supportive environment for early career researchers and we value colleagues who can plan and organise work independently and as part of a team.

This post will be based within the School of Health Sciences. Health Sciences at Southampton was ranked as #1 in UoA3 by the Times higher intensity weighted measure in the last REF.  The post is funded for 24 months from October 2020 with a fixed term contract initially, but we will work with you to identify opportunities for ongoing funding.

A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service clearance at Standard level is also required.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Chiara Dall’Ora via email: C.Dallora@soton.ac.uk

For applicants interested in a Part Time role, please note: This role is unlikely to support a Certificate of Sponsorship with a part time salary amount (a Certificate of Sponsorship is required to obtain a Tier 2 visa to work in the UK).

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
