You will join a new European project ‘Smart Textiles for Regional Industry and Smart Specialisation Sectors (SmartT)’. This is an exciting cutting-edge project involving collaborations between the Departments of Electronics an Computer Science (ECS) and Chemistry at the University of Southampton, SplashMaps Ltd (UK), CNRS (Normandy Regional Delegation, France), INSA Rouen Normandy (France) and IFREMER (French Institute for Ocean Science, Brittany, France). The successful candidate will be based in Southampton, but will have the opportunity to travel to attend research meetings and work with our partners.

 The SmartT project involves the formulation of highly innovative light emitting inks that can be printed directly onto textiles. Our Chemistry partners will be synthesising the active molecules that define the wavelength of the emitted light whilst the work in ECS will develop the printing methods, devices and prototypes. This technology offers the potential to revolutionise textiles enabling them to emit light at a multitude of wavelengths. For example, UV emitting fabrics will be developed for use in smart bandages where controlled doses of UV light will be used to kill bacteria and viruses. The post will undertake research in the one or more of the following areas related to the development of the inks and the printing of functioning light emitting devices:  

• Ink formulation for screen/inkjet printing and/or spray coating
• Organic Light Emitting Cell (OLEC) design and fabrication
• Material and device testing and optimisation
• Fabrication of demonstrator systems on textiles

 It is essential you have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in electronics engineering or materials science. Experience in the material development and testing for printed electronic devices along with knowledge of light emitting devices and experience of working or collaborating with industry, including preparation of reports for external clients is desirable. You should have a strong track record in preparing research publications and contributing to research funding bids. 

There will be a requirement to travel to project meetings, workshops and dissemination activities across the UK and France and occasionally further afield.

The post is full time fixed term until 30/03/2023 due to funding restrictions.

The successful candidate will be based in ECS as part of the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems Group where you will join a vibrant team of students and researchers working in the Printed Electronic Materials Laboratory. You will work in the project as part of a team including colleagues in Chemistry and across the consortium.
