Full Time Fixed Term (for 3 years)

As part of the cryogenics team at Southampton, you will be required to undertake a diverse range of engineering projects in the field of cryogenics through collaboratively interfacing with industry. The groups consultancy activities have an existing client base with access to a niche array of test facilities that provide the ideal platform and opportunity to explore challenging problems set by our partners.

You will generate enterprise income by performing a range of standard/ non-standard thermal and mechanical tests to characterises materials, and or apply other forms of experimental testing and instrumentation to validate components and systems for use at low temperatures. By taking an active role as Area Safety Officer, and contributing to the day-to-day operation of the cryogenic laboratory, you will naturally engage in applied research, and assist supervision of student projects. Through your own endeavour and level of engagement in these activities, you will have sufficient scope to explore your own research interests and continue to broaden your background knowledge.

The role will require skill to plan, coordinate, design and execute multi-discipline projects, and develop viable solutions that may require investigation through analytical techniques and tested experimentally. You will need to be able to work competently to deliver to timescales. Work independently and proactively to pursue new work and follow enquiries. Communicate information and instructions to clients and technicians during projects. Work together as a key member of the cryogenics team on a range of activities under the supervision of Dr Wendell Bailey and Prof. Yifeng Yang.

To be successful you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in mechanical engineering or applied physics with some evidence of experimental testing.  You should also have a background knowledge in cryogenics and thermodynamics, ideally evidencing “hands on” training with handling cryogens and other types of laboratory equipment.
