The University of Southampton in partnership with Blatchford Products Limited are seeking a motivated Graduate/Junior Embedded Sensor Engineer to be based in industry and complete on the final stage of an exciting Knowledge Transfer Partnership.  The role will be based in Basingstoke.

This project offers exciting opportunity for an engineering graduate or an engineering degree level professional to work directly in industry within in the field of lower limb prosthetics 

About Blatchford Products Ltd

Blatchford group is a world leading rehabilitation provider with clinical expertise in prosthetics, orthotics, special seating, and wheelchairs. With over 125 years of innovation and expertise, Blatchford produces the world’s most advanced microprocessor artificial limbs. Blatchford were winners of the prestigious RAEng MacRobert award for engineering innovation in 2016 for the first “integrated limb prosthesis”. 

The responsibilities of the Graduate/Junior Embedded Sensor Engineer will include:

  • Leading the development of prototype stump/socket instrumentation.
  • Working to and updating an established project plan.
  • Managing project management reporting – (Gantt Charts, Benefits log, Risk Register)

The desired Graduate/Embedded Sensor Engineer will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Essential: 

  • Engineering degree of at least 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in the fields of Electrical/Electronics, electromechanical, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines. 
  • Knowledge on basic embedded and application software development.
  • Understanding of Analogue Electronics and analogue sensors 
  • Knowledge of Project Management tools and techniques.

Desirable: 

  • Previous research and/or technological experience in medical devices, human gait analysis, prosthetics/orthotics and bioengineering.
  • Previous experience and/or strong Interest in collaboration with industries is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Project Management tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge on PCB Design 

 As this position is to complete an ongoing Knowledge Transfer Partnership the Graduate/Junior Embedded Sensor Engineer will receive the benefit of regular supervision from an academic from School of Engineering at the University of Southampton in addition the support offered on premises at Blatchford Products Ltd.

The post is offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 11 months and will be based in Basingstoke.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
