Research Fellow in Hollow Core Fibre Photonics

Fibre & Systems Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £31,406 to £38,587 Per annum
Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date:  Wednesday 15 December 2021
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  1600421PN

You will join our team working in the field of applications of emerging hollow core optical fibres in the fields of sensing and metrology. You will also work on the development of techniques to integrate these radically new fibres into conventional (solid fibre) fibre systems and to connect them to other photonic devices

The research looks to exploit the world leading advances that we are making in this new fibre technology and to transform it into a readily deployable technology for use in a variety of applications in metrology, sensing, lasers and telecommunications.

This project is a component part of the £6.1M Airguide Photonics Programme Grant funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and will involve collaboration with a wide range of researchers at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and external academic and industrial partners. You will be joining a large and successful team within our world-leading photonics research centre at the University of Southampton, UK and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides.

To be successful, you must have PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in fibre optics or photonics and extensive practical experience of working with optical fibre, particularly with respect to its handling, characterization, and building of fibre-based sub-systems and systems. You must have experience in modelling using COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab and have experimental experience in characterization of the thermal properties of optical fibres. Ideally you will also have experience in the wider characterization of optical fibre properties. A working knowledge of optical communication systems, and/or lasers, and/or optical sensor systems would be advantageous.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the Zepler Institute. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic, LGBT+ and disabled applicants to apply for this position. We gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy**, onsite childcare facilities along with other benefits such as the cycle to work scheme.

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and in the top 10 of the UK’s research-intensive universities. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has recently been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.  Our vision is to embed the principles of sustainability into all aspects of our individual and collective work, integrating sustainable development into our business planning, policy-making, and professional activities.  This commits all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment, whether this through switching off non-essential electrical equipment or using the recycling facilities.

 **subject to qualifying criteria

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered also from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
