The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton invites applications for a Lectureship post from candidates with interests in applied statistics and/or survey methodology, experience with developing statistical methodology, and a commitment to excellence in research and teaching.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose expertise can complement and further develop our current research areas in the statistical methodology, including survey methodology, survey data collection, official statistics, statistical modelling and inference, data analytics and new forms of data, data linkage, the use of administrative data, and actuarial science.

The post holder must have a PhD in statistics (or be close to completion, for candidates at level 4), an equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience in a relevant area, with a strong analytical and methodological focus, and be able to satisfy all the essential criteria detailed in the job description. Knowledge and expertise in survey methodology will be of particular advantage.

The post-holder will be required to contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate, develop and deliver a range of teaching modules; to contribute to our continuing professional development programmes; and to carry out administrative duties within the Department and the wider Faculty of Social Sciences.

The successful candidate will additionally be expected to engage in advanced study and research, including the publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals, and demonstrate leadership in seeking research funding. A track record in leadership in seeking funding would be an advantage, and is particularly important for appointments to L5. The post-holder should be able to demonstrate a strong, REF-quality, research portfolio, and will also be expected to contribute to research income generation and enterprise activities.

The post is available on either a part-time or full-time basis, but the minimum is 0.8 fte. The successful candidate will be expected to start ideally on 1 October 2022. The post is permanent, subject to satisfactory completion of a two-year probationary period.
