This exciting research post is part of a NERC UKRI-Japan funded Geodynamics project to investigate “slow moving earthquakes”. The project is a joint collaboration between the University of Southampton (UK) and the Japan Agency for Marine-earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

The project uses an optical fibre as a chain of distributed sensors, which will provide information equivalent to a network of tens of thousands of sensors. By comparing differences and similarities among the clusters and periods of the registered activities along the fibre, very valuable information can be acquired. Distributed fibre acoustic sensing (DAS) is used to create a distributed sensor of seismometers as it provides a great deal of acoustic information relying on conventional optical fibre links conventionally used for telecoms. The collected data needs to be analysed and a classification system built.

This post will be based in Electronics and Computer Science and concentrate on the development of a classifier based on waveform pattern matching registered by the DAS system as deformation of the optic fibre and contextual information to identify relevant events.

The DAS systems have already been developed and data are already available to be analysed. The post will include two parts. An initial part will require to manipulate the existing data to transform them from their current compressed from into more usable format. Then, the second part, will be to identify the best method to use to classify the events (statistical, outlier detection and machine learning approaches will be considered) and to implement it.

To join us on this exciting project you will need to have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in data classification, preferably with a knowledge of natural phenomena.
