Research Fellow (Faculty of Medicine, Psychiatry) Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams: Impact, Value and Effectiveness (ProACTIVE).

This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and experienced qualitative researcher to join a highly experienced research consortium to work on a three year Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams: Impact, Value and Effectiveness (ProACTIVE)  funded by the National Institute for Health Research(21/614 HSDR).

The ProACTIVE research consortium are seeking to appoint two postdoctoral research fellows (one based in Southampton; one based in Hull). This position relates to the position based within the Department of Psychiatry, in the Faculty of Medicine at University of Southampton. The post holder will report directly to Professor Julia Sinclair and will also work closely with Professor Phillips, the Hull Health Trials Unit (HHTU), and other co-applicants in different centres to deliver this programme of research.

The successful candidate will support the overall implementation of the research programme,co-ordinate the delivery of the qualitative components within Work Packages 1 and 3, and outputs as part of Work Package 4. A significant part of the role will involve project management tasks, ensuring patient and public involvement (PPI) is embedded within all activities, and supervision of junior research staff.

ProACTIVE Research Programme

Alcohol-related hospital admissions in England continue to rise, with estimates that 10% of patients admitted to acute hospitals may be alcohol dependent. There remains considerable variation in provision of hospital-based Alcohol Care Teams (ACTs) in England, and a limited evidence base for understanding their clinical effectiveness. The NHS long-term plan has invested £26 million to ‘optimise’ ACTs through the development of existing services and the establishment of new teams in 25% of hospitals in greatest need by 2024. Jointly led by Professor Julia Sinclair, University of Southampton and Professor Thomas Phillips, University of Hull, this three-year research programme is a multi-disciplinary, integrated, mixed-methods study designed to evaluate the impact of ACTs.

The ProACTIVE programme has four interconnected work packages (WP):

  • WP1: national survey to inform the development of a taxonomy for ACTs interventions, and exploration of the reliability and linkage of nationally available data.
  • WP2: evaluation of the clinical and cost-effectiveness of ACTs, using a quasi-experimental naturalistic study and an interrupted time series analysis using nationally available data (i.e. Hospital Episode Statistics).
  • WP3: qualitative evaluation of ACTs using an organisational ethnographic case study design to identify factors that shape the composition, delivery, and impact of ACTs.
  • WP4: facilitation of timely synthesis of findings from each phase of the programme

The development of an ACT PPI network to co-produce evidence and tools with patients, policy makers and commissioners about the best use of NHS funds in this area is central to the whole research programme.

The post is available from beginning of October 2022.

Interviews likely to be held between 1st - 5th September 2022.

Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Julia Sinclair at julia.sinclair@soton.ac.uk
