The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) has invested £225 Million across 37 interdisciplinary projects to address a range of world problems, including: ‘Teleconnected SARgassum risks across the Atlantic: building capacity for TRansformational Adaptation in the Caribbean and West Africa (SARTRAC)’. SARTRAC is investigating the impacts of and responses to the massive sargassum seaweed invasion of Caribbean and West African coasts since 2011, especially the impacts on and opportunities for the poorest in sargassum affected societies. SARTRAC comprises four (4) universities located in four (4) countries (Jamaica, Barbados, Ghana and UK). We have an exciting opportunity for one part-time researcher to join our team.

To be successful you will have quantitative and qualitative skills to carry out desk-based research on the potential for sargassum to contribute to transformational development through the blue economy. This 7 month fixed-term post would involve a desk-based literature review, and application of systems-based thinking approach (e.g. causal loop diagram) to assess the pathways to achievement of transformational adaptation opportunities from sargassum. In addition, you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification and experience in Geography, Environmental social science or other relevant subject, ideally with experience of sargassum. You will work closely with Southampton researchers, undertake primary research, write research papers, apply for funding, and liaise with Caribbean and African researchers.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given. 

This post is full time for 7 months due to funding restrictions
