About the position:

The String Theory and Holography Group in the School of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for up to 2 postdoctoral fellowships to work on the project “Chaos and Coarse-Graining in Holography: Towards a New Paradigm for Quantum Gravity”, which is funded by a UKRI Frontier Research Grant (replacing an ERC Starting Grant with the same title) and led by Principal Investigator Dr Felix Haehl. The 3-year positions will normally start in September 2023, but an earlier start date can be considered. 

Academic context:

Successful applicants will join the String Theory and Holography Group within Mathematical Sciences. Members include: Prof. Marika Taylor, Prof. Kostas Skenderis, Prof. Oscar Dias, Dr. Ines Aniceto, Dr. Felix Haehl, Dr. Carlos Mafra, Dr. Andreas Schmitt, Dr. David Turton and Dr. Ben Withers in Mathematical Sciences, as well as Prof. Nick Evans, Prof. James Drummond, Prof. Tim Morris and Dr. Andy O'Bannon in Physics. Furthermore, the Gravity Group in Mathematical Sciences works closely with the String Theory Group and studies gravitational waves, neutron stars and black holes.

Applicants' profile: 

The successful applicant(s) will have a track record of research in AdS/CFT with an emphasis on applications to conformal field theory, gravity, quantum chaos, quantum information theory, hydrodynamics, real-time formalism. They will contribute to the development of the research group.

The successful applicant(s) should have a PhD* (or be close to completing a PhD) in Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent research.

*Applicants for Research Fellow positions will be from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of their PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
