Applications are invited for Associate Professorship in Politics and International Relations (job title: Associate Professor).  We are investing in several posts to strengthen the thriving research, education and knowledge exchange culture of the Department of Politics and International Relations (PAIR) at the University of Southampton. 

The department has a world-leading reputation in democratic governance and global political society, political trust, democratic innovations, electoral behaviour, environmental justice, global health, migration, and development. We lead in the application of cutting-edge research methods, ranging from political ethnography to experimental social science. 

PAIR holds major ESRC and ERC grants, UKRI Future Leader awards, British Academy Postdoctoral and Leverhulme Trust Fellowships, and the Jean Monnet Chair in European Security Governance. The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world Universities, one of the UK’s top 15 research–intensive universities, and hosts the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods.  

About the role

We seek candidates with a strong background in one or more of: 

  • International Security: critical security studies, global security, geo-political risk, and strategic studies;
  • Comparative/British politics: political and electoral behaviour, gender and representation, experimental methods and innovations;
  • Democratic and global governance: environmental politics, migration, global health, development, AI and the web.

Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods is essential.

You will deliver research-led instruction, undertake internationally recognised research, and work to deliver research funding. 

About you

  • You have a PhD in politics or international relations or a cognate discipline. 
  • You demonstrate how you will play a central role in shaping research in the department. 
  • You demonstrate a national and international reputation through sustained publication in leading academic journals.
  • You demonstrate experience as a reflective educator, contributor to education planning, module and programme designer.
  • You demonstrate leadership skills through research, education, or academic leadership roles.  
  • You demonstrate ability to innovate, engage and inspire students and colleagues.
