Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and one of the UK’s top 10 research-intensive universities, with an international reputation for leading research, teaching, and enterprise activities. The School of Geography of Environmental Science was ranked fifth among all UK universities in the 2022 subject league table published by The Guardian.

The School of Geography & Environmental Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Associate Professor in Human Geography.

This appointment will strengthen the Economy, Society, Governance research group. Members of the group include Nick Clarke, Jen Dickinson, Brian Hracs, Rishika Mukhopadhyay, Darja Reuschke, Emma Roe, Dianna Smith, Peter Sunley, Julie Vullnetari, and Eleanor Wilkinson. Existing research focuses on: uneven development; creativity, entrepreneurship, and craft; heritage; citizenship and civil society; and everyday life.

We welcome applications from scholars active in one or more of these areas, and especially one or more of the following areas we hope to develop:

  • Feminist economic geography;
  • Urban geography, inequality, and race;
  • Governance, security, and digital society;
  • Political ecology or critical social science of the environment and sustainability;
  • Quantitative methods, data science, and AI.

We welcome applicants committed to working across the sub-disciplines of human geography, with scholars in other disciplines, and with a mixture of approaches and methods.

Teaching activities for this post will be primarily on the BA Geography programmes, with a possible contribution to the School’s MSc programmes. They will involve lectures, tutorials, practicals, seminars, and/or fieldwork. We welcome applicants committed to teaching across these programmes, including on core introductory modules, research methods training modules, and residential fieldtrips. There may also be scope for developing new modules in specialist disciplinary areas, and developing innovative modes of teaching and learning. We welcome applicants interested in, and/or experienced with, decolonising the curriculum. Training towards a Post-graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) qualification will be provided as appropriate. The School and University also offer mentorship support and a variety of opportunities for skills-building and professional development.

The post is tenable from 1st September 2023.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Justin Sheffield (Head of School; justin.sheffield@soton.ac.uk) or Dr Nick Clarke (Leader of the Economy, Society, Governance research group; n.clarke@soton.ac.uk).

The modality of education delivery will depend on the Covid-19 pandemic status and local conditions, but it is anticipated that the majority of teaching during the 2023/24 academic session will be in-person. The University has clear guidelines and plans for moving between online teaching and in-person teaching as needed. The primary concern underlying all these plans is for the safety of staff and students.
