From revolutionising the internet infrastructure and improving the lives of people affected by dementia, to gaining a deeper understanding of culture and creativity, research at the University of Southampton addresses some of the most challenging issues facing society today.  

Now, in its second year the University of Southampton is inviting applications to join our flagship Anniversary Fellowship scheme.

About you

Bringing your own unique vision of how to make a difference to society, you’ll help to shape the future of research, both at the University and in your own field. Over three years of protected research time, you’ll have the opportunity to tackle adventurous and novel research challenges.  Mentoring, peer support, training and networking opportunities will be available throughout, and we will help you to access external research funding. We will encourage you to work across disciplines and connect with external partners. 

Our Anniversary Fellows will support and inspire each other, fostering innovation on an international platform.  You will hold a PhD and will be on the way to demonstrate potential for research excellence in your field. Highly motivated and organised, you will demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills, and will also have exemplary powers of communication, alongside a collaborative and inclusive approach.

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences is particularly interested to hear from candidates pursuing research in the following general areas:

  • Advanced manufacturing for next generation electronic and photonic components
  • Optical and electronic materials
  • Nanoelectronics 
  • Nanophotonics
  • Optical fibres and their applications in the generation, transmission and manipulation of light
  • Novel integrated photonic technologies and their applications
  • Biophotonics
  • Solution processed nanodevices
  • MicroOptoElectroMechanical Systems (MOEMS)
  • AI applications in nanoelectronics and photonics
  • Solid state sensing systems
  • Light emitting devices and displays

The successful candidate will benefit from the established experimental facilities available in the Faculty’s School of Electronics and Computer Science and the Optoelectronics Research Centre, including the extensive Zepler Institute cleanrooms and associated laboratories.

These posts are offered on 3-year fixed term contracts. We will support Fellows to develop their skills and it is intended that Fellows will be successful in securing a permanent post at the end of the Fellowship. Part-time appointments will be considered on a pro-rata basis.
