Engineer a new world

We are one of the UK’s largest engineering faculties. Join our team, show us how to think even bigger – and we’ll help you explore what you are capable of, and inspire future generations to exceed their potential.

Look to the future with a university that will champion your most ambitious research interests.

Have you got a passion for biomechanics, x-ray imaging, biological imaging, engineering or physical sciences?    And can you share your knowledge with clarity and enthusiasm? Then we have a great opportunity for you. The University of Southampton is a unique place in which to explore what you are capable of. Inspiring thousands of students every year to explore their strengths and forge life-changing discoveries, we open up a wealth of opportunities for the most inquisitive minds. This is particularly true of our School which offers opportunities to work with multidisciplinary colleagues in µ-VIS Centre and the University/NHS Biomedical Imaging Unit http://www.soton.ac.uk/biu.

As one of the world’s top 1% of universities, we know what it takes to create an exceptional student experience. Encouraging our students to challenge conventional thinking, we underpin our exceptional academic courses with a dynamic culture of innovation and research. This is an ethos that we roll out to our staff too, and as such, we enjoy a uniquely collaborative team-spirit in which our colleagues support one another in their endeavours. This progressive approach plays a vital role in maintaining our reputation for shaping knowledge in a wide variety of areas.

To make the most of this incredible opportunity, you will need to be PhD qualified, or you will have a relevant professional qualification. Your research track-record will be impressive, and you will be passionate about working in partnership with the team to share expertise. While some teaching experience would be useful, it is more important that you have great communication skills with the ability to engage students in their learning, be that through group sessions or on a one-to-one basis. As long as you can bring a real passion for the field to our department, we will help you develop your presentation skills.

The key text for the role is:

Use of image-based techniques for biological and medical applications

  • Advanced image processing (e.g. reconstruction, correlative imaging, automated feature extraction)
  • Biomechanics, computational modelling
  • Statistical shape modelling of biological structures
  • Engaging in and developing content for undergraduate engineering teaching

In turn, we will help you find the ideal work/life balance, with flexible working hours and onsite childcare facilities. Committed to tackling gender inequality, we are Athena SWAN bronze recognised, as we are determined to address the under-representation of women in Engineering.  With a generous benefits package that includes a contributory pension scheme, competitive holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts, this is a place where you are sure to excel.
