The Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) Research Group at the University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher specialized in computational fluid dynamics. The AFM group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to hypersonics.
You will be part of Prof Ralf Deiterding's team working on the Cartesian parallel adaptive AMROC fluid solver framework and concentrate on using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to carry out massively parallel high-resolution large eddy and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent thermal flows through fluid-saturated complex porous media. You will compare your results directly to corresponding experimental data obtained by collaborators in the same funded project. At a later stage, your DNS data will be used by to calibrate a coarse-grained engineering model for convective heat transfer within and through porous material. Simulations will be run on the University of Southampton’s supercomputer Iridis and in particular on the national supercomputing facility ARCHER2.
It is essential that you have completed or are close to completing a PhD* with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics of high Reynolds number flows. A strong programming background in C++ as well as parallel high-performance computing experience in a Linux environment is expected. Some previous experience with either lattice Boltzmann methods or multiscale modelling of porous media flows will be highly valued highly. A publication record in computational fluid dynamics, specifically, large eddy simulation or direct numerical simulation with the LBM is desirable.
There will also be opportunities to collaborate with graduate students working on advanced developments related to lattice Boltzmann schemes and to supervise undergraduate students on topics of applied computational fluid dynamics.
This post is fixed term initially until the 31st December 2024 with the option to renew until 31st December 2026.
*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
