We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Associate Director to lead the strategic marketing of our academic research and our income generating academic enterprise units.

The University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities.  We address some of the most challenging issues facing society: from improving cancer treatments to optimising renewable energy; from exploring culture and creativity to shaping the future of artificial intelligence. We are acknowledged, in the most recent Knowledge Exchange Framework 2, as being one of the most outstanding universities in the UK for business and public engagement.

From this strong foundation, this role will allow you the opportunity to lead a dedicated team focused on developing the commercial potential of academic knowledge exchange activities through successful marketing. You will also get to work with academic colleagues at the cutting edge of their discipline, enabling them to better shape and promote their successful research discoveries and impact.

Reporting to the Director of Communications & Marketing, you will be part of the department’s senior leadership team and work closely with colleagues in Corporate Communications and Digital User Experience to provide a holistic approach to advancing the University’s strategy.

About you

To be successful, you will have strong interpersonal skills and a deep understanding of university culture and how to influence it in order to effect positive change. You will be a credible and effective stakeholder manager able to use your extensive knowledge of marketing to advise senior staff. You will have significant experience of successfully leading, developing and motivating a team of staff. Bringing energy, vision and the ability to constructively challenge, you will work in partnership with a variety of stakeholders to develop innovative marketing solutions and successfully implement them.

What we can offer

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference by extending the reach of our world leading knowledge to benefit the communities we work with and to help us deliver our ambitious University Strategy.

We value diversity and inclusivity in our teams to reflect society, and better enable our education, research and enterprise to transform the communities we serve. Applications are welcomed from all backgrounds and particularly encouraged from individuals in traditionally underrepresented groups.

This is a full time, permanent position, with a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days. We are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.

If you want to take your career to new heights and believe you have the skills, experience, and drive to help shape the future of the University of Southampton, then we look forward to receiving your application.
