Visiting Artist/Teacher in Classical Voice
The Department of Music at the University of Southampton invites applications for the role of visiting artist/teacher in classical voice. Visiting teachers earn £55.32 /hr on contracts that are renewed annually according to student demand and Department needs.
You will be a professional singer specialising in art song or opera, with demonstrated experience teaching ambitious students in higher education settings. You will have an active and continuing career as a singer at national and/or international level. You will be able to help deliver teaching across our degree courses, with a particular focus on our MMus pathway in performance. You will have the ability to work with others and be able to adapt to teaching approaches suitable for an effective international student learning experience, in the interest of a diverse, historically curious, egalitarian, anti-racist and sustainable approach to music studies.
You will have completed, or be about to complete, an advanced degree in music (at masters or doctoral level), or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. Your work as a professional performer will inform your approach in the studio. You will have a strong interest in vocal health and be comfortable teaching students from diverse backgrounds, including those whose first language is not English.
You will join a vibrant and forward-looking academic community in the Department of Music at Southampton, a centre of exceptional research and teaching in musicology, ethnomusicology, performance, composition, music technology, music education and music business. The department is particularly well-known for its commitment to Western opera including study of patronage, institutional history, editorial practice, performance practice, operetta and burlesque and the creation of new music theatre. As an important centre for opera scholarship and performance we enjoy deep connections in the international opera world, for example to major opera houses in the UK, continental Europe and North America and key publication projects such as the The Works of Giuseppe Verdi.
