Consulting Engineer

ISVR Consulting

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £34,980 to £42,978 per annum
Full Time Permanent
Closing Date:  Monday 16 October 2023
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  2448823LH

A consulting engineer is sought by ISVR Consulting, the consultancy group of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research.  The focus of the post is to support the design and development of audio systems, including their applications in active noise control, sound reproduction, including ambisonics, and health and safety products.  The position would be suitable for a postgraduate in acoustics or mechanical engineering, but previous industrial or consultancy experience would be advantageous.

The ideal applicant will have a good knowledge of audio systems, digital signal processing, real time audio processing systems, sound perception, and the health and safety aspects of audio reproduction. The position will provide the opportunity to further develop this knowledge, while working with experienced consultants within the Unit.  Working as a consultant involves close collaboration with clients, so good oral and written communication skills are essential.

Level 4 engineers are given a good level of responsibility and contact with clients, but they initially gain experience by working on projects negotiated and planned by Senior Consultants who are specialists in particular business areas. This could include development work on a wide variety of products ranging from ships to headsets.

An important function of the Unit is to provide a path for ‘technology transfer’ from the research groups of the Institute to industry or government bodies, and so interest and involvement in these research activities is encouraged. Membership of the Institute of Acoustics and the Audio Engineering Society is encouraged.

Informal enquiries should be made to Simon Roberts, ISVR Consulting, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO17 1BJ.
