We seek to appoint an Industrial Liaison Officer (ILO) to support the enterprise activities and projects within CORMSIS (Centre of Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems) of the University of Southampton.
Although desirable, it is not necessary to have a background in Operations Research / Management Sciences / Information Systems. Demonstrable experience with enterprise and linking academia with industry is the main driver for this role. Therefore, the ideal candidate should have good negotiating skills and good capacity for networking.
This role is part-time at 60%, but with the option to be full-time with the additional 40%working for the Southampton Business School in similar activities in order to support the strategic objective to expand the industry-based projects included in other MSc programmes within DAR (Decision Analytics and Risk) group or other departments within the SBS. Both job descriptions are attached.
CORMSIS is one of the largest groups of its type in the UK, spanning Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Business School and includes academic colleagues with interests in Operational Research (OR), Management Science (MS) and Information Systems (IS) from other parts of the university.
Our research and teaching cover the whole spectrum of current OR/MS/IS from mathematical optimisation, through business analytics and simulation to qualitative research in problem structuring. In the latest (Feb 2023) QS World University Rankings, OR and Statistics at Southampton was ranked 7th in the UK and 39rd in the world.
The main role of the ILO is to engage with business, industry and other organisations to bring opportunities for consultancy and research projects in consultation with academics and industry partners. Specifically, securing MSc industrial-based projects for the students enrolled in our OR/MS programmes. This role includes attending recruitment events as well as organising recruitment fairs and other events. There are also administrative duties associated with fulfilling these activities.
As part of your role you will have the opportunity to deliver education sessions to CORMSIS students about topics within your area of experience and expertise that can help student in their preparation of engaging with industry during their MSc projects or after graduation.
