Full Time Fixed Term for 24 months
Closing Date:  Wednesday 06 March 2024

There are two posts at level 4 or level 5, depending on qualifications and experience.

Are you an early or mid-career academic with a passion for Clean Maritime Engineering?  Are you looking to join an academic team where you can build your profile and experience?  Then the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering is the ideal place to make your mark. We have brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant research culture, and are committed to all our students achieving their best.

We are seeking dynamic, self-starters to join our team with a focus on building our capabilities in Clean Maritime Innovation. You will join our Department, which is one quarter of the School of Engineering and is one of the strongest and largest within the UK, as well as being part of community of 400+ academics in the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, which comprises colleagues with expertise across a wide range of maritime engineering and associated disciplines.

The Research Fellow will develop proposals for external funding in the area of clean and zero carbon maritime systems, and related topics. This will include working directly with industrial, government and funding stakeholders with a view to establishing large scale facilities for demonstrating and accelerating the adoption of novel and game-changing clean maritime technologies. You must be able to work both on your own initiative and as part of a wider team, be able to manage complex projects where the challenges are not clearly defined and seek collaborative consensus towards common project outcomes.

Within this environment we will support you to further develop your academic career while you play a pivotal role in enhancing our research strength. We are a team that ensures that our student cohort are educated to the highest of standards and are looking for individuals who want to keep our programmes and modules at the cutting edge of maritime engineering education while sustaining our high student satisfaction.  We offer and support many opportunities for external engagement and gaining leadership experience.

To make the most of this exciting role, you will need a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in a relevant area of maritime engineering along with a track-record of published research. You’ll have a proven ability to develop innovative research proposals and attract research funding.  Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others.

In return we help you shape a role that’s uniquely tailored to your interests and lifestyle. As a university with an Athena SWAN silver award we are recognised for our commitment to improving equality for all in science and engineering.  Our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.

Please include (i) a research statement, (ii) a project management statement and (iii) a diversity statement addressing your commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You can enter these statements in the textboxes provided in the online application form. Alternately, upload documents (no more than 1 page per statement) and provide a summary of these statements in the textboxes. All three statements are required for your application to be considered. As part of these statements, candidates should evidence:

  • future research interests/plans (including grant capture);
  • past research activities demonstrated by journal publications and funding portfolio;
  • that you can work well in a diverse team
  • how you have managed projects including external stakeholders, delivering on time and to budget, including the use of literature and data in support of decision making
  • that you have potential to lead activities relevant to the department including outreach.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.   Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This post is a fixed term of 24 months with a possibility to extend the position beyond the end of the current contract duration.

Your application will be treated in the strictest confidence. For informal inquiries about these posts or other opportunities, please contact the Head of Maritime Engineering, Dominic Hudson (dominic@soton.ac.uk ), or Alan J Murphy (a.j.murphy@soton.ac.uk) .
