Research Fellow in Sparse Signal Processing and Matrix Completion

Signal Processing & Control Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £27,854
Full Time Fixed Term (1 Year)
Closing Date:  Wednesday 28 August 2013
Interview Date:   Monday 07 October 2013
Reference:  273313KR
A research position is available in the area of sparse signal processing and matrix completion. The successful applicant will work on the project "Constrained low-rank matrix recovery: from efficient algorithms to brain network imaging," recently funded by the EPSRC. The project aims to develop new signal processing strategies for spatio-temporal data and their application to areas in human brain imaging. The aim is to develop efficient computational approaches to recover or estimate data-matrices under low-rank and sparsity constraints. This will be achieved by building on recent progress in the field of compressed sensing and related areas. The new algorithms will then be applied to brain imaging data. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the techniques will be used to estimate and model connectivity pattern in the human brain.

The successful candidate will join the Signal Processing and Control Group in the Institute of Sound and Vibrations Research and work under the supervision of Dr Blumensath.

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant area of Signal Processing together with a strong mathematical background. Prior knowledge of compressed sensing and matrix completion theory and algorithms is highly desirable. In addition to these specific research experiences, the successful applicant should have experience in presenting research results at group meetings and leading international conferences and writing up research results for publication in leading peer-viewed journals.

The fixed-term appointment is initially for 12 months.  The proposed start date is October 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.   Informal enquiries should be made in the first instance to Dr T Blumensath (email: thomas.blumensath@soton.ac.uk, ISVR, University of Southampton.

Your completed application should include (i) the application form; (ii) your Curriculum Vitae; (iii) the names and addresses of two referees.

The closing date for this post is 28 August 2013. We use an online recruitment system so please apply through www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. If this is not possible please telephone +44 (0) 23 8059 2507 for an application form.  Please quote reference number 273313KR on all correspondence.
