Horizon Europe Research Fellow in High Voltage Cable Condition Monitoring

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position within the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK. The work will involve development of sensing systems capable of monitoring the operational health of long length (e.g. greater than 200km) high voltage cables. The project will also involve the development of a test facility so that other European project partners can demonstrate the outcomes of their research. The obtained results will be written up as project deliverables such as reports or presentations as well as publications in academic journals and conferences. This post is part of the Horizon Europe Framework “CableGnosis” programme (Life Cycle Centre for Cable Diagnosis) awarded under the call for proposals: HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-01-15: HVAC, HVDC and High-Power cable systems.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in electrical/electronic engineering and/or optoelectronics. Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given. The candidates must possess detailed knowledge and understanding of ageing, degradation and failure modes of electrical plant.

We are looking for a self-starter, able to organise own research activities effectively and who is able to plan and justify focus on extensive research that will result in long-term technological benefit. The successful candidate will have an ability to clearly document and communicate research results. You must be able to work effectively in a team and organise time, tasks and responsibilities with other team members. Experience in project management will be an advantage.
