Research Fellow– 3D Planetary Climate Modelling

Dr João M. Mendonça invites applications for a 3-year full-time Research Fellow position to join a new research group in planetary climate modelling at the University of Southampton. The research group is funded by a Horizon Europe Guarantee grant and will grow to 8 members in the coming year (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=EP%2FZ00330X%2F1).

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the newly established group at the University of Southampton, led by Dr João M. Mendonça. This group is focused on developing an innovative class of 3D climate models. The new climate model, OASIS, aims to address the limitations of current models and will enable unprecedented simulations of planetary climates, including those of Earth and other planets in the Solar System and beyond. Furthermore, the model will be open-source.

The group is engaged in international collaborations, and this position comes with allocated funding for professional travel, including visits to collaborating institutions such as UCL and Caltech.

The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the ongoing development of the model's design, performance, reliability, and maintainability, as well as leading the implementation of novel methods. The new model will adhere to best practices for reproducible research. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with other researchers in the group and working on projects involving the OASIS model.

Candidates should have a PhD* or equivalent qualifications and/or experience in Computer, Applied Mathematics or Climate Modelling Sciences. It is also expected that the successful applicant has experience in software development and the ability to independently design, manage, and implement complex programming projects.

Experience in parallel numerical algorithms, high-performance computing, or scientific programming is essential. Familiarity with CUDA applications is an advantage, although it is not required. The start date is flexible, but starting in September 2025 or earlier is preferred.

If you would like to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr João M. Mendonça, Astronomy Research Group, via email at j.mendonca@soton.ac.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Applications should include:
