Research Fellow – EPSRC grant ref: EP/L026910/1
Start date: As soon as possible, but no later than 30th November 2014
Project: Innovative photomechanical approaches in identification of the dynamic mechanical behaviour of materials – PhotoDyn
This is a unique opportunity to take part in an exciting 5 year project as part of the EPSRC Established Career Fellowship awarded to Professor Fabrice Pierron.
The project aims at exploring a new paradigm in high strain rate testing of materials based on ultra-high speed deformation imaging and inverse identification. The team will consist of Professor Pierron and two post-doctoral research fellows; the second, more experimental position will be advertised soon.
The role of the PDRF will be to take leadership in the area of constitutive behaviour of materials at high strain rates. In the five years of the fellowship, it is expected that the person gradually develops his/her own track of research to hopefully be in a situation to be a strong applicant for a permanent academic position at Southampton to consolidate the research group around Professor Pierron at the end of the 5 year period.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
Expertise in constitutive modelling of materials, ideally including high strain rate behaviour.
Experience in implementation of constitutive models in finite element computations.
Excellent communication skills.
Potential for a high level academic career.
The word ‘material’ is understood in a wide sense, as many different types of materials will be studied. It is not expected that the candidate should have knowledge of material behaviour for all materials concerned by the project.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Fabrice Pierron, Engineering Materials research group. Email: email@example.com, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 2891.
You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. If you need any assistance, please call Geraldine Lewis (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 2507. Please quote reference 442614BX on all correspondence.
