Project:   Innovative photomechanical approaches in identification of the dynamic mechanical behaviour of materials – PhotoDyn

EPSRC grant ref: EP/L026910/1

This is a unique opportunity to take part in an exciting project as part of the EPSRC Established Career Fellowship awarded to Professor Fabrice Pierron.

This project aims at exploring a new paradigm in high strain rate testing of materials based on ultra-high speed deformation imaging and inverse identification.  The team will consist of Professor Pierron and two post-doctoral researchers; one of these posts has already been filled.

The role of the present PDRA will be to concentrate on the experimental side of the project. This includes the design and commissioning of test fixtures, exploration of new technologies to improve full-field measurements, the conduct of experiments including ultra-high speed imaging and image analysis such as the grid method or digital image correlation and analysis of the data using Matlab-based routines.

You will have an excellent command of the English language and ideally have :-

  • Expertise in high strain rate testing of materials.
  • Experience in full-field strain measurements and high speed imaging.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Fabrice Pierron, Engineering Materials research group. Email:, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 2891.

Start date: April 1st 2014
