The Electronics and Computer Science Department ( and the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research ( at the University of Southampton seeks two Research Fellows to join the cloud security team led by Prof. Vladimiro Sassone.

This research will take place in a new European project SUNFISH (SecUre iNFormatIon SHaring in federated heterogenous private clouds) and will be done in collaboration with Italian Ministry of Finance, The University of Rome La Sapienza, Malta Information Technology Agency, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, IBM Israel, Zentrum fur sichere Inforamtionstechnolgie, Graz University of Technology, Ministry of Finance in Malta, South East Regional Organized Crime Unit and Cybernetica ( The aim of SUNFISH is to enable the secure federation of private clouds based on the Public Sector needs: federated private clouds belonging to different Public Sector Entities will be able to share data and services transparently, while maintaining required security levels.

The research conducted by the University of Southampton team will focus on the design and implementation of a distributed infrastructure devote to monitoring runtime data access. This involves monitoring the polices associated to each piece of data being accessed, reporting compliance through suitable visualisation techniques, and logging for audit purposes. Such monitoring infrastructure will also allow the timely detection of potential and confirmed security breaches, which will trigger further investigation and alerts.

Applicants should have a PhD* (or equivalent) in computer science in a relevant field with preference for specification and enforcement of security policies in cloud computing and/or formal analysis techniques for security properties. Previous experience in one or more of these areas is considered essential: blockchain technologies and their applications to distributed computing, visual analytics for security, model checking and applied crypto. Previous experience in the area of stream data analysis with emphasis on privacy/confidentiality would be advantageous.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
